More than 4 million patients in the US report using cannabis medicinally, and the number is likely higher due to expanding cannabis access in many US states. As the scientific evidence for its role in symptom relief evolves, hospice providers must also be aware of the unique risks associated with the modern cannabis products available to patients in their communities. In this webinar, we will explore the impacts of high potency THC products, contaminants, and synthetic cannabinoids. Effects such as cannabis hyperemesis syndrome, psychosis, and cannabis use disorder will be discussed, along with perspectives specific to the use of cannabis by medically frail patients receiving end-of-life care.

Note: This educational activity strives to support generally accepted hospice practices in place at the time of the course date, but it cannot supersede appropriate medical judgment nor proper regulations—each of which may vary with contextual considerations.
  1. Review current U.S. cannabis policy landscape relevant to hospice practice.
  2. Summarize cannabis use patterns among adults ≥65 years and serious illness populations.
  3. Describe pharmacology and potency of modern cannabis formulations.
  4. Recognize organ system–specific risks and emergency care trends in older adults.
  5. Outline practical, evidence‑informed counseling strategies for hospice and palliative physicians
